Friends, I invite you to join me in extending a very warm welcome to our newest staff member here at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church!

MICHAEL MONIZ will join our parish staff as Leader of Song / Cantor in our Music Ministry beginning on February 21, 2021, the First Sunday of Lent. This is a very exciting opportunity for St. Peter’s as our parish continues to grow! So, join us online at 10:00AM for our Celebration of Holy Eucharist at stpetersdartmouth.org/watch or join us on Facebook Live.

We have recently restructured our Music Ministry here at St. Peter’s. In this new role, Michael will help provide leadership for our Music Ministry and will be the lead vocalist for all parish liturgical celebrations on Sundays and for other liturgical events.

Michael is a very talented musician and has a deep knowledge and love of liturgy. He radiates passion and joy for parish ministry and everything that he does. Michael is a very hard worker and has helped transform the parishes where he has worked in many ways. Although we only get to meet Michael right now on our live stream, I look forward to the day when you can all meet him in person!

The word “cantor” comes from the Latin word “cantare” which means “to sing.” The role of the cantor is a very important role in the life of a parish. The cantor leads and guides the gathered assembly in worship through song, currently online via our live stream and when we gather for in-person worship in the near future.

The cantor has the responsibility for any songs or hymns that require solo passages, leading the assembly in recurring song refrains and inviting the assembly to join their voices in songs and acclamations throughout the service.

When we are permitted gather for in-person worship, Michael will coordinate our other volunteer singers who have served our parish in the past and who will now form a “schola” and will help sing refrains and other melody parts.

Michael has been involved with Music Ministry since his early teenage years at the Parish of St. John the Baptist Church in New Bedford in the 1990’s. He helped to form, then later direct a Youth Choir, which was previously nonexistent. Michael was also deeply involved in building and running the Youth Ministry for the church. This environment created a place where Young Adults were able to grow and share both in their spirituality and friendships which have lasted through the decades.

Michael studied at UMass Dartmouth and worked many years mainly in Operations and Store General Manager roles. He has been happily married since 2005 and is the father of three boys, two of which are twins.

Over the last six years, Michael has been a Cantor at St. Francis of Assisi in Swansea. He also helped for nearly a year at St. John of God in Somerset, where he planned and lead the Portuguese Mass in song. In between those two churches, Michael had also been singing with his home Parish of St. John Neumann in East Freetown as a Cantor or singing Bass with the Choir.

Michael is looking forward to praying joyfully through heartfelt song with all of us here at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Welcome, Michael, to St. Peter’s!
